Who Holds the Threads?

Generative AI promises artistic emancipation while delivering a new order of dependency. Whoever produces an image, a sound, or a text draws on models whose training data, computational capacities, and infrastructures rest in the hands of a few corporations of the global North. This talk asks after the threads on which artistic creation now hangs, and after the hands that hold them. From a power-critical and feminist perspective, it examines how the supposed democratisation of creative tools perpetuates old colonial and economic asymmetries, whose labour remains invisible, and whose aesthetic norms assert themselves in the outputs of these systems. At its centre stands the question of what artistic autonomy can still mean under conditions of technical heteronomy, and what room for agency remains to artists when the very means of their work become the object of critical reflection.
Dr. Dorothea Winter is a philosopher and author working at the intersection of epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics, with a focus on the philosophical and societal implications of artificial intelligence. Her work brings power-critical and feminist perspectives to questions of autonomy, dependency, and judgment in digital societies. She produces the philosophy podcast Philosofun and speaks and writes regularly on the ethical and political dimensions of AI.
